On Saturday, Cabrini's softball season came to a disappointing finish. After finishing the regular season with a 24-4 record and defeating the likes of Regina and Richmond, both highly ranked teams in their respective divisions, the Monarchs fell to Catholic league rival Riverview Richard by a score of 4-3, in a game that went 9 innings.
Richard scored first on a triple down the right field line followed by a sacrifice fly in the second inning. They added another run in the third on a single to center, with the runner moving to second on a groundout by the next batter, and eventually scoring on another single to left. Richard pushed across another run in the sixth on a single, stolen base and another RBI single to stretch their lead to 3-0.
The Monarch bats came to life in the sixth with leadoff single by Junior centerfielder Emma Delcotto, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior shortstop Michaleigh Vallimont then doubles to right center to score Delcotto from second. After a groundout moved Vallimont to third, she scored on a sacrifice bunt by Junior third baseman, Mackenzie Schick. Down 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Sophomore left fielder Wyndhem Reid singled to left and then proceeded to steal second base. Senior Madison Buerkle, down to her last strike then singled to left driving Reid in with the tying run.
Neither team scored in the eighth, as Cabrini left runners at second and third. Then in the ninth Richard homered with out and to take the lead and eventually the win as the Monarchs left the potential tying run stranded at second base. A good season ended with a disappointing loss. The Monarchs will return the bulk of their lineup next year and look forward to another successful season. Go Monarchs!
