Varsity Softball Travel to Divine Child for a Double Header

The Cabrini softball team traveled to Dearborn to faces the Falcons of Divine Child. The Divine Child field is unique to the Catholic League, in that it is the only field without a fence and the games are played on a men's softball diamond. Additionally, long fly balls which would be home runs at other venues routinely turn into doubles.

That was the case yesterday for the Monarchs and junior first baseman Caleigh Muglia, who had two doubles among her three hits to lead the Monarchs to the first of two wins against the Falcons in a 4-2 win. Both blasts by Muglia to deep left, would have easily been home runs at other facilities. Along with the power by Muglia, the Monarchs were led by freshman catcher Lily Vallimont who had 3 hits and junior third baseman Mackenzie Schick who had 2 hits. Junior Vivian Gonzalez, who was once again solid in the field at second base, drove in 2 runs as well. Sophomore Mackenzie Noah had another good day, pitching a complete game and striking out eight.

The nightcap was a struggle, but again the Monarchs proved victorious. This time the fence issue bit the Falcons as one of their hitters was held to a long triple on a blast that would have been a home run elsewhere. The Monarchs jumped out to an early lead, but the Falcons fought back. With the Monarchs holding a two run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, Divine Child had three consecutive singles to lead off the inning and cut the lead to one.

After a brief meeting at the mound with Coach Debbie Norman, Noah bore down and struck out the side stranding the tying and winning ruins on base for a 7-6 win. The Monarchs were led offensively by Senior Madelyn Kugelman who had 3 hits, Junior Michaleigh Vallimont, 2 hits and 2 RBI, Schick who again contributed 2 hits,  Gonzalez 2 hits and 2 RBI and Noah 2 hits. Defensively, junior Emma Delcotto came up big with two running catches in center field.

The Monarchs next opponent is Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Friday when the teams square off in a doubleheader. Cabrini then goes back on the road to face Riverview Gabriel Richard on Tuesday.
