On Saturday, March 27th the Cabrini Monarchs traveled to the Holland Aquatic Center for the Division 3 State Swimming & Diving Championships with their only qualifier, Drew Bylow, a Freshman co-op from Monroe St Mary's Catholic Central. Bylow had qualified in three separate individual events, 200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, choosing to swim the 200 Free and 100 Back for the event. Bylow went into the day seated 27th of 31 in the 200 Free and 25th of 30 in the 100 Back.
First up for Bylow was the 200 Free where he broke his own school record by dropping just over a second from his seed time securing him 25th place. After a two hour wait, Bylow jumped back into the water in heat one of four in the 100 Back and won the heat with nearly a two second time drop from his seed time. After waiting for the water to settle on the remaining three heats, Bylow ended the day by making the podium, placing 15th and breaking another school record in the process.
Drew performed amazingly well for his first State Meet. He never let the competition distract his focus to push the limit and challenge himself. It was a special moment to see the look on his face at the finish of the 100 Back. He knew it was a great swim. He didn't know how great until he looked up at the scoreboard. With Bylow's 15th place finish, the Cabrini Monarchs finished the day in a tie for 35th place as a team. It was a great finish to a most peculiar pandemic shortened season.
