Cabrini Coop Swimming & Diving Kick Off Summary

This year's Cabrini Swimming & Diving program has taken another step forward and has started a cooperative program with Monroe St. Mary's Catholic for the 2021 season.  This years roster is smaller than in previous years due to a large graduating class from last year.  The Monarchs bring will bring 15 athletes to the pool deck (8 Girls & 7 Boys).  The roster is made up of six seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and one freshman.  A senior, Alana Mafessoli, two sophomores, Chris Russelburg and Breanna Fressel along with freshman Andrew (Drew) Bylow are the new faces on the deck and bring a barrel full of competitive experience to the program. Each of the four are multi-sport athletes with great competitive spirit.  Returning underclassmen for the Monarchs this season are sophomores Taylor Bonar and Marin Genaw along with juniors Christian Campitelle, Lily Heath, Kyra Roth and Lauren Schulte. This group makes up the main body of the team and packs a heavy dose of intensity and determination.  Our five returning seniors, Riley Bonar (Captain), Thomas Day (Captain), Brendan Fix, Max Iglesias and Pratham Patel bring back with them the experience and strength of this years team.  The group is certain to bring some amazing swimming to the pool deck this season. The coaching staff is looking forward to a productive season.

Results from Cabrini vs U of D Jesuit

On Thursday, January 28th Cabrini hosted U of D Jesuit for the kick off dual meet of the 2021 season.  The Monarchs ran head first into the steam rolling Cubs and went down to defeat (U of D 125 Cabrini 28).
Highlights for the Monarchs were a season best swim in the 200 medley relay by the team of Drew Bylow (PR split), Thomas Day (SB split), Max Iglesias (PR split) and Lily Heath (SB split).  Bylow followed that up with two second place finishes in the 200 free and 100 backstroke.  Iglesias followed his medley relay swim with a PR in the 100 butterfly while Day turned in a SB split in the 200 free relay and Heath turning in a SB time in the 100 backstroke.  Seniors Alana Maffesoli and Brendan Fix turned in PR swims in the 100 free and 500 free respectively.  Overall after nine days of practice, the entire team swam exceedingly well considering the minimal training time available prior to the first meet.  We were very pleased with the entire teams effort in our first outing.

The Monarchs next test will be on February 2nd when the team travels to Woodhaven for a dual meet with the Warriors.

Results from Cabrini vs Woodhaven

On Tuesday, the Cabrini traveled to Woodhaven HS for a dual meet with the Warriors.  The Monarchs ended up with another loss falling to the Warriors by a score of 105 to 64,

Highlights for the Monarchs started with a third place finish in the 200 free by Thomas Day.  Day's time was just over a second off of his PR in the event. Day followed that up with a performance in the 100 free that was also just slightly off his PR for the event.  In the 50 free, freshman Drew Bylow scored a PR and a first place finish and followed that up with another PR and first place in the 500 free. Bylow and Day then combined with Lily Heath and Max Iglesias in the 200 free relay and scoring SB swims for Heath and Iglesias.  Heath also was less than a second off her PR time in her third place finish of the 100 backstroke.  Iglesias also turned in a near PR swim in the 100 butterfly finishing fourth.  Season best (SB) performances also came for Alana Maffesoli in the 50 free, Taylor Bonar in the 100 breastroke, Brenday Fix and Riley Bonar in the 100 freestyle, Pratham Patel in the 100 backstroke and Lauren Schulte in the 100 breastroke.

The team turned in another powerful performance surprising the coaches with big time drops in almost every event.  The Monarchs next test will be on February 18th when Cabrini travels to Merch high school for a dual meet with Detroit Catholic Central.
