This past Saturday, the Cabrini Monarchs Swim & Dive Team traveled to compete in the Woodhaven Warrior Invitational. With only 16 athletes competing, the Monarchs achieved a place in the top 16 in 6 of the events, and had a total of 17 season records. The team results were: Dundee – 410, Woodhaven – 404, Wyandotte Roosevelt – 275, Monroe – 239, Allen Park – 183, Erie Ida – 180, Cass Tech – 146, Riverview – 143, St. Frances Cabrini – 122, Wayne Memorial – 83.
First to compete were our divers, Senior Grace Sabo and Freshman Grace Debarardino. Grace Sabo secured a fifth place spot at the completion of the 6 dive event, and Grace Debarardino successfully competed for the first time as an individual diver, having competed in relay events in her last two appearances.
Following diving, our swimmers were eager to compete and see how their early season work would pay off. To begin, the relay team of Lily Heath, Tom Day, Daniel Misovich, and Evan Trohimczyk finished 9th in the 200 Medley Relay, and also dropped 3 seconds off their fastest time. The same relay team competed in both the 200 Freestyle Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay, finishing 3rd in the 200 event, and 8th in the 400 event. Evan Trohimczyk and Tom Day competed in the 50 Freestyle and secured a 3rd and 7th place finish respectively; both dropped time from their season best. Senior Chloe Roth swam in the 500 Freestyle event with a 19th place finish. Sophomore Lily Heath finished 23rd in the 100 Backstroke, cutting almost 2.5 seconds off of her fastest time. Following that, Senior Daniel Misovich came in 15th in the 100 Breaststroke event. In the final event, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the relay team of Max Iglesias, Kyra Roth, Chloe Roth, and Tanner Pogorzelski secured a 17th place finish.
All in all, the Monarchs had an incredible showing. Not only did they achieve 17 season records, several swimmers competed in events that they had never swam in a competition before. Both veterans and rookies completed all their assigned races, and gained a stronger understanding of their swimming and diving abilities.
