Cabrini Swimming & Diving Catholic League Championship

The Cabrini Monarchs traveled to the Livonia Recreation Center on Friday to compete in the Catholic League preliminary swimming & Diving Championships.  The Monarchs entered the day with hopes of starting the weekend off with a bang and wound up exploding in a frenzy of personal and season records.  Twenty-Four athletes entered the event and all 24 found their way to a best time.  It was a really special moment for us to see everyone celebrating the moment.  Some of our rookies dropped huge amounts of time in their first event of the afternoon, inspiring them to push even harder as the day went on.  The results even inspired the rest of the team to push through their own comfort zone and it worked.  Times just kept dropping.  At the conclusion of day one, the Monarchs broke 36 personal records (PR’s), 3 season records (SR’s) and qualified 7 athletes to return on Saturday for League Finals.  Here’s a list of the qualifiers and the events they are entered in on Saturday.

200 Medley Relay Team of Lily Heath, Daniel Misovich, Joe Misovich and Evan Trohimczyk

200 IM – Daniel Misovich

50 Freestyle – Evan Trohimczyk and Thomas Day

Diving – Grace Sabo

100 Butterfly – Joe Misovich

100 Freestyle – Evan Trohimczyk, Lily Heath and Jonas Raiha

200 Free Relay Team of Thomas Day, Joe Misovich, Daniel Misovich and Evan Trohimczyk

100 Backstroke – Jonas Raiha

100 Breaststroke – Daniel Misovich and Lily Heath

400 Free Relay Team of Jonas Raiha, Joe Misovich, Lily Heath and Thomas Day

On Saturday, the times just kept dropping with Cabrini turning in 8 new PR’s.  In the 200 Medley, the Monarchs cut another second off their prelim time, finishing 7th and setting two more PR’s by Daniel Misovich and Trohimczyk.  Daniel Misovich followed that performance up with a season best performance in the 200 IM that placed him 20th.  Next in the 50 Freestyle, Trohimczyk and Thomas Day finished 16th and 21st respectively.   Day also set another PR with his swim.  The Diving event found Grace Sabo finishing 9th, taking the highest individual place by any Cabrini athlete for the weekend.  In the 100 Butterfly, Joe Misovich turned in a 20th place finish that was followed up by three Monarch swimmers in the 100 Freestyle.  Evan Trohimczyk, Lily Heath and Jonas Raiha turned in an 11th, 21st and 22nd place finishes respectively.  Heath’s swim once again found her on the short side of a minute for the second time in the weekend.  The 200 Free Relay followed that up with its second fastest time of the season and a 7th place finish.  In the final two stroke events the Monarchs Raiha scrambled to a 21st in the 100 Backstroke while Daniel Misovich and Lily Heath turned in a pair of PR performances in the 100 Breaststroke with a 20th and 23rd place finish.  In the final event of the afternoon, Cabrini’s 400 Free Relay team knocked 5 more seconds off their preliminary time, placed 7th and saw Thomas Day set one final PR   anchoring the relay team.  It was a fitting way to end the regular season’s schedule.  Here are the final team results:

Detroit Catholic Central 549, Brother Rice 454.5, U of D Jesuit 378.5, De La Salle Collegiate 287, St. Frances Cabrini 88. Fr Gabriel Richard 87.

With the meet concluding as a complete success, it was a Great Weekend to be a Monarch!

A single Cabrini athlete qualified for post season competition.  The Monarchs Diver, Grace Sabo had additional room to celebrate.  By placing 5th at Thursday’s Division 3 diving regional at Cranbrook Kingswood HS, Sabo qualified for the second year straight to compete at the Division 3 Swimming & Diving State Finals next Friday and Saturday at Oakland University.
