Wayne County Invitational Cabrini Varsity Swimming & Diving

The Polar Vortex may have canceled the bulk of the week’s sporting events for everyone but one event stood up to the weather.  The 2019 Wayne County Swimming & Diving Invitational went off as planned this past Friday and Saturday for the Cabrini Monarchs.  The Monarchs sent eight athletes to the competition in five individual and three relay events.  Here are the team results from the event.

Northville 398, Grosse Pointe South 396.5, Salem 283.5, University of Detroit Jesuit 280, Trenton 135, Livonia Stevenson 134, Grosse Pointe North 128, Dearborn 93, Canton 76, Riverview 76, Allen Park 66, Livonia Churchill 61, Woodhaven 46, Martin Luther King 36, Wyandotte Roosevelt 35, St. Frances Cabrini 30, Plymouth 25, Gibraltar 20.

The Monarchs had a fantastic weekend with 11 of 17 of their entries turning out to be season or personal best performances.  It was good to get back to work in the pool after the four day hiatus from the weather.  The team had their heads in the right frame of mind and it showed up over and over as the times kept dropping.  The weekend started on Friday evening with the Monarchs diver, Grace Sabo taking on the other 21 divers in an 11 dive competition that found Sabo in 9th place at the end of the evening just 0.15 points out of one of the top 8 medal spots.  It would be the highest place finish by any Monarch for the weekend.  On Saturday, the event started with our 200 Medley Relay team of Cate Day, Daniel Misovich, Joe Misovich and Evan Trohimczyk equaling their season best time and scoring Daniel Misovich and Trohimczyk a season best (SB) split time.  Trohimczyk then went on to swim the 50 and 100 Freestyle events with a 24th place finish in the 50 and a 21st place finish in the 100 with a personal record (PR) that cut 1 ½ seconds from his old mark.  In the 100 Butterfly, Joe Misovich set his own PR placing 33rd and cutting over a half second from his previous record.  Cabrini then moved onto the 200 Freestyle Relay where Evan Trohimczyk, Joe Misovich, Daniel Misovich and Thomas Day scored a 10th place finish netting a season best time for the relay and giving Trohimczyk a SB mark.  Daniel Misovich and Thomas Day also scored SB splits for the effort.  Next, in the 100 Backstroke, Jonas Raiha set a SB time by lowering his time by over a half second, placing 41st.  In the final event of the day, the Monarchs 400 Freestyle Relay team of Thomas Day, Joe Misovich, Daniel Misovich and Lily Heath swam to a 14th place netting Lily Heath and Daniel Misovich a PR split and Thomas Day a PR 100 Freestyle time.  It was a fitting end to a very special day.  It was another great day to be a Monarch!

Next week, the Monarch swimmers and divers travel to Warren Woods Tower HS for a double dual meet between De La Salle, Catholic Central and Cabrini on Tuesday evening at 6 PM then move to Ferndale HS on Thursday for a double dual meet between University of Detroit Jesuit, Brother Rice and Cabrini at 5:30 PM to close out the league head to head competitions.
