Cabrini Track & Field Competed in Both the Catholic League Championship & the Wayne County Championship

On Saturday, May 21st and Wednesday, May 25th respectively, the Cabrini Track and Field team competed in both the Catholic League Championships and the Wayne County Championships, to finish off the season before some athletes travel to Grand Rapids to compete in the State Championship.

 

The boys were led by Junior Christopher Russelburg, who took first in the 3200m and second in the 1600m (10:22.61 and 4:42.99 respectively). The distance runners for the boys had multiple top 10 finishers, including Junior Brayden McKay who took 8th in the 800m run (2:16.85). Freshman Ralph Kaleniecki ran a 12:02.48 to finish in 9th place in the 3200m. The sprinters rounded out the night with Junior Owen Tomsic running a new personal best of 46.29 (third) in the 300m Hurdles and Junior Tony Russo running a 26.79 in the 200m, to finish 13th overall. In the field events Junior Ben Maffesoli took sixth place in shot put with a throw of 34-05.5 and Junior Oswaldo Nava finished fourth in the discus, with a throw of 106-06.

 

The 4x200m boys relay, consisting of Tony Russo, Seniors Joey Berro and Bram Wolf and Tomsic took fifth place with a time of 1:41.78. The 4x800m boys relay placed fourth as McKay, Junior Logan Eiden, Kaleniecki and Russelburg combined for a time of 9:19.89.

 

The girls were highlighted by Sophomore Ava Teed finishing first in the 3200m and breaking her own record by more than 14 seconds (11:36.33). Teed also took first place in the 1600m with a new personal best of 5:28.19. Freshman Grace Kendziuk ran the 400m to finish fourth (1:07.81) while Senior Lily Heath took fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:48.63. 

The sprinters recorded an eleventh place finish as Seniors Ella Nowc, with a time of 14.63, and Abby Portman in the 100m recorded a fifteenth place finish with a time of 34.22.

 

The girls field events were highlighted by Freshman Maeve O’Connell taking sixth in shot put (25-02) and Senior Briana Garza finishing sixth in discus (53-10).

 

The girls' relays were rounded out by Kendziuk, Heath, Sophomores Nicole and Ava Teed putting together a time of 11:02.72 in the 4x800m relay to finish first. The 4x100m relay team of Sophomore Lyn Dang, Junior Niamh O'Connell, Freshman Ellie Heath and Nowc finished fourth with a time of 59.58.

 

The Monarchs now head to the state tournament in Grand Rapids on Saturday, June 4th.
