Cabrini Boys & Girls Bowling Team Headed to Battle Creek for State Championship

On Friday, March 4th, the Cabrini boys and girls bowling teams, who the week before won their regional titles, faced off in the state championships in Battle Creek. In the qualifying first round, they finished fifth out of the eighteen schools that were represented, and moved on to match play, which consisted of the top eight teams in the state.

In the quarter final match they faced off against Bad Axe and defeated them with a pin count of 1066 to 963. With the win they reached the semi-finals and squared off against the top seeded team from Grass Lake. The Monarchs fell after a hard fought battle 1107 to 1102, to finish 4th in the state. The girls team also took center stage in Battle Creek. In the qualifying first round, they finished fourth out of the eighteen schools represented and also moved on to match play.  In the quarter final match, they defeated Ravenna with a pin count of 1006 to 987. In the second round they faced the number one seed Grass Lake, and fell 1090 to 978. Both teams represented Cabrini in sterling fashion.  Only Grass Lake, the eventual runner ups, could hang with the Monarchs in both divisions combined.

On Saturday, March 5th, seven Cabrini bowlers competed in the individual state championships.  Junior Jordan Downham was the number one seed after the qualifying round, consisting of the top 60 bowlers in Division 3 in the state.  All three of the remaining girls bowlers finished in the top 40. Senior Samantha Graf finished 32nd, Sophomore Brianna Manning finished 37th and Freshman Addison Schindler finished 40th. Dwonham fell in the round of 16 by just ten pins, but based on her overall performance still made the all-state team.

On the boys side freshman Bryce Cadaret  was the number five seed after the qualifying round. He also got knocked out in the first round, but also made the all-state team based on his overall performance. The two other Monarch bowlers who had qualified for the state championships finished in the top 35 overall. Junior David Kowalski finished 35th and fellow Junior Nathan Radke finished 17th, just missing the cut to the final sixteen by one pin.

Overall it was a great performance by the Cabrini bowlers. Coach Josh Jablonski could not say enough about how proud he was of the kids and their resilience over the two days of competition. In his fourth year of coaching the Monarchs, he said this team exceeded even his highest expectations.  Next year should be even better with Cabrini losing only three seniors, and several bowlers moving up from the Junior Varsity teams.  Congratulations Monarchs on a fine season!
