Varsity Swimming Headed to Woodhaven HS for a Double Dual Meet

This past Tuesday, the Monarchs traveled to Woodhaven High School for a double dual meet between the Cabrini Monarchs, Lincoln Park Rail Splitters and the Woodhaven Warriors. The high powered Warriors came away from the team results scoring two victories.  Woodhaven 106 vs Cabrini 74 and Woodhaven 111 vs Lincoln Park 69.

The tightest team result finished up with Cabrini needing to finish second and third in the final relay to take the victory and that's exactly what they did.  Cabrini finishing on top Cabrini 93 vs Lincoln Park 89.  It was a tough battle from the very first event with Cabrini and Lincoln Park changing the lead several times.  The team never lost focus even when Lincoln Park finished 1 - 2 in the 500 Free and 100 Back and first in the 200 Free Relay.  Coming into the 500 Free with a lead and finishing the 100 Breast 1 - 2 - 3, put us in a perfect place to seal the victory.  We were really proud of everyone's commitment to never let up.  The evening turned out producing season or personal records for 89% of our performances.

Here are some of the individual highlights that sealed the victory for the Monarchs.  The team of Lily Heath, Thomas Day, Daniel Misovich and Evan Trohimczyk kicked off the evening with an overall first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay.  Heath jumped right back into the pool in the 200 Free finishing 3rd overall with teammates Tanner Pogorzelski and Niko LaGreca right behind her in 4th and 5th respectively. Heath, Pogorzelski and Niko LaGreca all scored PR's in the effort.

The next big bundle of team points came with a 1 - 4 - 5 overall finish in the 50 Free by Trohimczyk, Day and Misovich.  The Monarch divers Grace Sabo and Grace DeBerardino finished 3rd and 5th overall with DeBerardino turning in a PR destroying her old record by nearly 20 points. In the 100 Free, Trohimczyk and Day teamed up again and turned in a 1 - 3 finish with Day scoring a PR breaking his old mark by over 2 seconds.  In the 500 Free the Monarchs turned in another three PR performances with Chloe Roth cutting four seconds and Lauren Baird and Brendan Fix setting their new mark for the first time this season.

In the 200 Free Relay, the Rail Splitters surprised Cabrini by touching out both the A and B teams for the Monarchs putting heavy pressure on our Back and Breast strokers going into the final three events.  In the 100 Back, Kyra Roth, Marin Genaw and Ben Luna all turned in PR performances and in the 100 Breast the team of Misovich, Heath and Pogorzelski turned in a final 1 - 2 - 3 punch with Heath and Pogorzelski both scoring PR's.  In the final event of the evening Baird and Niko LaGreca turned in PR splits helping the Monarchs 400 Free relay teams to a 2 - 3 finish in the event. The team of Kyra Roth, Max Iglesias, Lauren Baird and Niko LaGreca finished second and Riley Bonar, Chloe Roth, Rachel Zarb and Pogorzelski finished third.

It was an extra special evening to be a Monarch!

On Saturday, Monarch sprinter Evan Trohimczyk traveled to Calvin College to compete in the 2020 MISCA Swimming & Diving Championship.  Trohimczyk was entered in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and turned in two strong performances. Trohimczyk's 50 free performance left him less than three tenth of a second away from a State qualifying time setting him up for an exciting finale over the final three weeks of the regular season.

The Monarchs final test will be this Thursday when they take on the Allen Park Jaguars for their traditional Parent/Senior night event at Allen Park.
