Cabrini Hockey Captures First Division 2 Catholic League Championship

The Cabrini Hockey Team captured their first Division 2 Catholic League Championship in the program's history on Saturday night by defeating University Liggett 6-5 in a game that took two additional overtime periods to determine a winner. The Monarchs got off to a hot start just 13 seconds into the game when Austin Molina scored in front of the net on a great pass from Luke Metropoulos and an additional assist went to Alex Teed. The Monarchs continued the pressure throughout the first period out-shooting Liggett 14-3. Freshman, Hayden Kieltyka would get the second goal of the game on a powerplay late in the first period.

The Monarchs continued the scoring eight minutes into the second period with a powerplay goal from another Freshman, Andrew Seminara. About a minute and a half later, Luke Metropoulos scored on another powerplay to put the Monarchs up 4-0 late in the second period. Shortly after, a flurry of penalties placed the Monarchs in a shorthanded situation for most of the remaining second period. University Liggett capitalized on the man advantage twice before the end of the second period to pull within two goals heading into the second intermission.

Liggett's momentum carried them well into the third period and they would score two more goals to tie the game with 4 minutes left in the game. A minute and a half after the game tying goal, Liggett would take a 5-4 lead after a tip in front of the Monarch's net. Just when it looked like the game was slipping away, Monarchs defensemen, Nick Brown tied the game up with a minute left in the game with a shot from the point the found its way to the back of the net. Brown's goal would send the game into overtime.

It took two additional overtime periods for the game to finally end when the Monarchs capitalized on a 2 on 1 opportunity with a beautiful pass from Austin Kieltyka to Evan Taylor for the game winning goal. Taylor's game winning goal was his team high, 22nd of the season. The double overtime victory clinched the Division 2 Catholic League Championship for the Monarch's hockey team. It is their 1st Catholic League championship in the program's history.

Evan Taylor finished the game with 4 points on the night, Luke Metropoulos had 3 points, and Freshman, Andrew Seminara had 2 points. Bram Wolf, Alex Teed, Austin Molina, Hayden Kieltyka, Nick Brown, Austin Kieltyka, and Zach Bagozzi each had a point on Saturday night as well.
