2018-19 Woodhaven Holiday Tournament

The Cabrini Monarchs faced off against Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central on Friday night in the semi-final game of the WHS Tournament. The Monarchs really dominated the game from start to finish and came out with a 6-3 win against SMCC. They opened up the first period with a Powerplay goal from Senior, Matt Gavlick that came with an assist to Zach Bagozzi. It was Gavlick's first goal of the season and it would set the pace for the remainder of the game. About 4 minutes later, Junior Austin Kieltyka put one in the back of the net with an assist to Luke Metropolous. Alex Teed would open up the scoring in the second period with assist to Colin Mathis and Austin Kietyka. SMCC would get their first goal early in the second period but Junior, Evan Taylor would answer back with two consecutive goals to close out the second period. SMCC had a surge mid-way through the third period but it wouldn't be enough to catch the Monarchs. Senior, Austin Molina would seal the game with an empty net goal. Sophomore goaltender Brandon Hiuser, would start in net for the Monarchs and finished the game making 28 saves on 31 shots on net. Luke Metropolous would finish the game with 3 assists and Zach Bagozzi would also finish with two points.

The Monarchs entered Saturday's championship game against the host team, Woodhaven Warriors. The #6 ranked Warriors entered the game on Saturday night on an 11-game win streak. The Monarchs would out-shoot the Warriors 31-17 in the contest but fall just short by losing the game 6-5 in Overtime. The Monarchs would carry the play in the first period with special teams’ goals from Matt Gavlick (shorthanded) and Evan Taylor (Powerplay) and assists to Nick Brown and Zach Bagozzi. However, the Warriors would come out strong in the second period by scoring two early goals, only 15 seconds apart to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. The third and final period would be filled with scoring as Cabrini tied the game with a big goal from Freshman, Andrew Seminara and then took the lead back with a beautiful goal a minute later from Luke Metroplous. However, Woodhaven would answer back again to tie the game at 4-4. With just 8 minutes left in the game the Monarchs found themselves shorthanded and the Warriors would take a 5-4 lead on a Powerplay goal. The Monarchs would continue to fight and found themselves on a Powerplay late in the game after a high sticking penalty to Woodhaven. As soon as it looked like the penalty would expire, Senior Zach Bagozzi would take a shot from the blue line and fellow Senior, Austin Molina would tip it in to tie the game at 5-5 and send it into Overtime. The Overtime period wouldn't last long as the Warriors would end the game after a Monarchs turnover and would come away with a 6-5 win. Some other highlights from the game were that Freshman, Carson Muglia would get his first point of the year, another Freshman, Andrew Seminara would finish the game with two points, Zach Bagozzi would have two points, and Junior, Nick Brown would have two points as well.
