The Cabrini Monarchs dropped a tough 5-4 loss in overtime to the Riverview Gabriel Richard Pioneers on Saturday night. It was the championship game on the 2018 News Herald Holiday Tournament.
The Monarchs were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead when Luke Metropoulos scored on just the second shift of the game. The Pioneers answered late in the first period to tie the game. The Monarchs came out quick in the second period when Alex Teed scored from in front of the net to regain the lead for the Monarchs. The tide shifted in the second period and the Pioneers scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead heading into the final period. Despite trailing two goals for the majority of the third period the Monarchs continued to play hard and found themselves on the powerplay with 8 minutes left in the game. Defenseman, Evan Taylor was able to find the back of the net off a pass from Nick Brown to pull within one. The Monarchs again went on the powerplay at the end of the game and Luke Metropoulos scored his second goal of the game to tie it up and send the game into overtime with only 17 seconds left in the game. The overtime period was dominated by the Monarchs but they were unable to get a shot passed the Pioneers goaltender. Then with 1:38 remaining in overtime a Pioneer forward scored to end the game. The Monarchs will take on St. Mary's Catholic Central next Friday at 5:00pm in the Brownstown Sports Center.
